Project Description

Rear Yard

Having renovated most every room in their home, the front yard and driveway, it was time for the owners of this Lincolnwood property to focus on their back yard. Spanning 75 feet wide, the lot is an expansive, inviting space with much potential. The concrete squares of the existing rectangular patio against the house had become uneven over the years, and low walls on three sides cut off access to the yard. Overgrown and splitting arborvitae ran the entire length of the property, taking up much of the lawn.

A new puppy brought another challenge. Digging holes everywhere and chewing up plants, the energetic puppy required a separate dog run area. The homeowners wanted a solution to take back their yard and revitalize the tired landscape.

The new, large entertaining space with sunken firepit area has gentle curves and opens out to the yard. Constructed of Bluestone colored Rivenstone, it features Old Quarry sitting walls and grill surround. The lower portion with the firepit showcases Brussels Block and a custom Old Quarry curved seatwall with built-in back support. This wall integrates into the raised patio portion and sitting walls. Ledgestone coping is featured throughout. With views into 5 yards, privacy was critical. A 6-foot high evergreen hedge on two sides blends in with the neighbor’s on the third side. Flowering shrubs, colorful perennials and grasses provide color throughout the year.

A fenced dog run on the side of the house provides the puppy with a place to exercise without sacrificing the rest of the garden.

Under-coping lights and uplighting allow the space to be used day or night. The luxurious setting is perfect for relaxing and entertaining.
